Diary

Crossfit workout today. In my Vibrams.

I completed an 800 meter run.
5 medicine ball throws.
55 squats
17 pull ups
15 burpees
800 meter run

about 27 minutes.

The gym’s been going to more of a calisthenics / high repetition phase in teams. I prefer heavy weights, myself.

Yesterday I ate a meat sauce over spaghetti squash; for dinner chicken marinated in a onion, garlic, salt and pepper, cinnamon, garam masala, and cumin blend with sauteed vegetables (squash, spinach and onions). Oh yes – and a bottle of wine. There were three of us, and we did in four bottles, actually. And I feel fine. Must be the Cuban cigar.

Current struggles

I’ve been slowly gaining weight. There are a couple reasons.

The first is beer. After going off of the strict paleo and goint 80/20 and adding wine, I didn’t gain any weight. Felt fine.

Beer however, is killing me. It’s very much a social thing: I don’t drink beer at home, and its a comfort.

The second is that I’m not getting enough sleep.

My friend, and doctor, Jon Emens pointed me to a study that individuals who got less than 6 hours of sleep a night could be induced to have type 2 diabetes.

Today I went to CrossFit for the 4th time since the end of July. We did five rounds of:

200 meters + 25 lbs;
30 situps
20 pushups
and 10 burpee pullups.

I modified it to 5 burpees and 5 modified pullups.

finished in 36:16 minutes.

Nick, a fireman, and I chatted for a couple minutes. He’s a fireman. He saves lives. And he had lost 40 lbs in 4 months. He looked amazing. He’d gone 99%. I was impressed.

I’m taking up my buddy Matt’s suggestion: drink only on school days. Even on Thursday (which is not a school night for me), I restricted myself to one glass. I’ll continue doing that.

On wednesday, however, I broke lots of rules. A parishioner bought me one of my old favorite sandwiches: an italian combo. I ate a little more than half. I couldn’t eat the entire thing. Then later I had a delicious home-cooked dinner after a funeral. Spaghetti in clam sauce. Homemade foccacia.

I still feel sick.

Loved it while it was happening. The sauce had plenty of olive oil, and I covered it with Parmesan Cheese.

But the next day, I needed Tums and felt bloated. I’m only now recovering.

Matt’s starting a 99% paleo trip on August 22nd. I’m starting on Sept 1st, but I’ve already started prepping myself, eliminating all grains, cheeses, sugars and beans as of tomorrow. Tonight was simply a chicken cauliflower sweet potato soup, some sopressata, and four glasses of wine. Not completely paleo, but aside from the neurotoxin, alright.
