Crossfit Total
I did my first crossfit total.
A crossfit total is a backsquat, shoulder press and a deadlift.
I broke 700.
Back squat 265
Press 130
Deadlift 315
My goal = 850.

Dude you officially are stronger than me. Gawain, I am now upset. Why is my back squat so weak? Why is my deadlift almost equal to yours but my squat so lame? And don’t get me started with your press number. Are you made of steel?
I wonder if it’s because I’m shorter I don’t need to power as far.
Second, I never stopped doing weights after graduating from Divinity School. I wasn’t always efficient or focused, but I started crossfit with about ten years of weight training. Usually it was maintenance minded, but with some bouts of strength improvement, but I can count the number of weeks I’ve gone without some kind of weight training on one hand. Even while I was in Korea, I got to the gym.
I also think my coach, Andy, has a great intuitive sense about what I can do and can’t. So he’ll say, “you can go farther” but also remind us that pride doesn’t make one strong.
My real limitation is my cardio vascular ability. I might physically be able to do certain rounds, but unable to go too much farther. The other day I did 7 rounds of jumping 7 times 24″. But it took me a very long time. I was doing 95 lb power cleans another time, but it was my mind (well, and my wrists) that killed me.
I still run a 18 minute mile and my fastest row is 1:57. Then I die.
You are a slow moving freight train. You will get faster as you lean out and get conditioned. For both of us, I counsel: patience.
